GAGOSIAN PRESENTS MANZONI:AZIMUT AT DAVIES STREET GALLERY, LONDON

Organised in cooperation with the Fondazione Piero Manzoni, the exhibition celebrates the work of Manzoni and friends during the brief life of the Azimut Gallery in Milan from 1959 to 1960.

Opening at Gagosian Davies Street, 16th November 2011 -

A youthful, experimental exhibition space that lasted just eight months, Azimut presented thirteen exhibitions and became a nerve center for an international set of provocative young artists. The founding of the gallery by Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, with the help of their mentor Lucio Fontana, followed their collaboration on Azimuth, a journal dedicated to the “development of the newest and youngest avant-garde painting.”

The Davies Street gallery transported the visitors back to the
former glory days of Azimut

Linee (Lines), drawings of a single line on a length of paper,
which he rolled up and sealed in a cardboard tube, then labeled and signed.

We finally got our act together to upload this event we attended on 1st November - Jake and Dino's book signing at the newly opened Whitecube Bermondsey space.

Architects Casper Mueller Kneer have converted a south London warehouse into the city’s third White Cube gallery, set back from Bermondsey Street via an entrance yard. The building dates from the 1970s

Tube lights mounted onto raw-steel mesh ceiling panels provide
this space with a distinct rhythm. Since when have I get so excited over powerfloated concrete floors? Nice!

The dramatic conclusion of the recent New York magazine profile of Maurizio Cattelan contains the following key to understanding the mysteries of the Italian artist’s work: “Cattelan becomes very animated talking about his homage to ‘Mike the headless chicken,’ who ‘was so famous… alive for years without a head, fed with a dropper. The farmer was probably preparing dinner and left a little part of the brain by mistake.

Today we visited the first UK solo show of Syrian artist - Fadi Yazigi
Che, Angel, It's Me, Donkey at the Qattan Foundation
7th - 28th October 2011

Amongst King-Che, bronze sculpture are recent paintings and
reliefs which reflect the personal tragedies of everyday contemporary
Syrian reality, in its pre and post revolutionary manifestations.

We pay a visit to the first Sluice Art Fair, located in Mayfair.
Featuring 14 primarily artists run not-for-profit spaces. This
interesting fair only lasts two days - Saturday/Sunday.
Definitely worth checking it out!

FRIEZE WEEK: DAY FOUR

Hammer time: we were greeted by protesters outside
Sothebys last night while the auction was in progress

Sotheby's Bad for Art?

With standing room only, the crowd overflowed to the ground floor reception area watching the sale in progress from the tv screen.
The contemporary and 20th-century Italian sale set six artist records
and raised 40 million pounds ($63 million)

We then headed to the ICA for the Gagosian Frieze party, funky
Franz West sculptures were presented on the roof top.

We took the opportunity to check out the Kassay show

so minimal its almost a blank canvas!

The ultra strict policy restricted guests from coming upstairs,
with one in - one out system, Laurence Graff and Sharleen Spiteri
were made to wait in line >
Celebrities 0 - 1 Grade one listed building

Guess what? Lots of room for more.
The party was simply not happening without the crowd.
Amazing bar and great DJ though.

We ditched Gagosian and went to the Arts Club, Simon de Pury
spinning out some funky tunes.

Frieze 2011 VIP preview day -

We walked into Frieze 2011 VIP preview day, there -
Dasha and Gwen Stefani were checking out Dan Colen's
new Thrash painting at Gagosian stand

Rather than the usual names like Ruscha, Hirst, Warhol, Prince
on the stand, we were pleasantly surprised to find a playful and witty

With Frieze upon us, we've decided to share with you our diary for this week - where we've been and what we saw!

We kicked off with the preview at PAD on Berkeley Square,

Robilant + Voena hosted an enchanting dinner with the
Morandi's still life theme - roses and bottles decorate the table.

The dinner also celebrates the new space opened on the third floor
with the Win Delvoye show and his "Twisted Jesus" displayed at
the far end of the gallery.

It was fun to sit next to Tim Steiner who happily agree to show me
his Wim Delvoye Tattoo after dinner, he was sold to a collector in
Hamburg for 150,000 euros and will be on his way to MONA (Australia)
next month to be exhibited as an artwork, on loan by his owner!

A long overdue retrospective of five decades of German visual artist Gerhard Richter's work was unveiled last night at Tate Modern, titled Panorama to celebrate the artist's 80th birthday. The show spans 14 rooms at Tate Modern, not to be missed! Until 8th January 2012

Last weekend we were in Cormons, near Trieste (North East Italy) to visit the studio of Gianpietro Carlesso. ARTNESIA is working very closely with Gianpietro on a major book project that will be released mid 2012 and will be a monograph of his works since the late Eighties. It is always a pleasure to visit this amazing, yet undiscovered part of Italy and monitor the progress of Gianpietro's works.
